Teacher Tuesday Week 17: Lorie Delizo, 7th + 8th grade Science Teacher at Caliber Beta Academy.2/28/2017 Above, Lorie is pictured with our 8th graders engaging in a closing day circle discussion about Transgender bathroom laws.
Lorie Delizo is our science extraordinaire and content lead at Caliber Schools. She teaches 7th and 8th grade science at Caliber Beta Academy. In her classroom you will see labs, rigorous 'college style' lectures, and a comfortable, close-knit culture. She comes to us as a Bay Area native and former teacher at KIPP and Alt School. A quote from Lorie's coworker at Caliber Beta Academy: "I have not met a person more fully committed to ensuring the best education possible for her students. Her high expectations for herself, her students, and her peers have made her such an amazing teammate. She's also just overall awesome and I feel really privileged that I have the opportunity to work with her." All about Lorie: I'm a Bay Area native that was born and raised in San Francisco, and at this point I can't imagine calling anywhere else my home. After high school I almost said yes to a spot at UC Berkeley, but instead decided that I wanted to spend some time in a new city for a few years by attending UC San Diego. It was at UCSD that I did two things really well: 1) I learned a bunch of science, and 2) I became really involved in student activism on campus. While all the other biology majors decided to become doctors, I ended up deciding to pursue an M.Ed and career in education. It felt like the right choice, given my commitment to social justice and my desire to do something that would positively impact youth of color. After my first year teaching in San Diego, I returned to the Bay Area to fully settle down and teach. I spent 8 awesome years teaching science at KIPP: Bayview Academy in San Francisco, 2 years teaching science and running a school site for AltSchool (a private school and tech startup, also in San Francisco), and after that finally found my way to Caliber Beta. During that journey I also lived in a bunch of places: Daly City, San Francisco, Oakland, and now Richmond where I live with my wife (also an educator) and dog (not in education, he's just a chihuahua). I'm glad to be at Caliber working alongside some of the most dedicated teachers you'll ever meet, teaching a group of some of the most curious and dynamic students the Bay Area has to offer. I also feel particularly special because I'm the only teacher who will have taught a core class to both 7th and 8th graders this year! A recent interview with Lorie: What is your favorite thing about teaching middle school science at Beta? I really enjoy when students get into the labs we do in class. It's fun to see them get excited about being hands-on, collecting data, and having those "a-ha moments" that you can only get from doing true science. What was your favorite subject growing up? I've always liked science the most. Did you always think you were going to become a teacher? I actually had no idea until right before graduation my 4th year of college. Favorite candy bar or sweet treat? I'm an ice cream person nowadays, especially when it comes to fancy ice cream. If you could go on a dream vacation, what would you do + where would you go? I would probably try to relive my honeymoon in Hawaii, and I would do as many outdoor things as possible because Hawaii is a magical, beautiful place. What is your favorite thing about the Bay Area (or specifically about Richmond!)? In terms of the Bay Area, my immediate family is here and that is really important to me! As for Richmond, I've only been here for a year and I feel like I'm still getting to know it. Right now my favorite thing about Richmond is my Crossfit gym; it's a collection of amazingly nice, encouraging people (second only to the Caliber staff). What is one fun fact that most people don't know about you? I take a language class every Sunday because I'm trying to improve my Tagalog...which has made it really hard to learn Spanish (which I'd like to also learn) since my brain can only deal with learning one language at a time. There is a tiny bit of overlap though, which is nice. Come visit Caliber Beta Academy to see Lorie and her scientists in action!

Meet Tracee Cotto, our Founding 2nd Grade Level Lead and ELA Teacher at Caliber ChangeMakers Academy. Tracee is the master of our station rotation model, guided reading, and differentiated groups. She is a leader on campus and loved by all students and staff! Words from Tracee's co-worker at ChangeMakers: "Tracee is such an integral part of the team. I feel so fortunate to work with her! Whether it's sharing resources, giving advice, or just simply lending a listening ear, she's always there to support me and the other teachers. She has so many great ideas to help our students grow and succeed. They are lucky to have her, and so are we! " All About Tracee: Education has always been a passion of mine. Growing up in an unstable household, I found school to be my foundation and support system. I knew I could wake up in the morning and see the same faces at school, which comforted me. It provided me with the stability I needed growing up. My teachers were my world and I wanted to provide the same type of love and support to children one day. During my high school years, I realized how our educational system was dysfunctional and I wanted to become involved to help provide equitable education for all children. I truly believe that a zip code (or zone area) has no correlation to a student's success in life. This led to my involvement as a corps member in Teach For America. As a corps member, I taught both 2nd and 3rd grade in Newark, NJ. Once I finished my commitment with Teach For America, I decided to follow my passions and move to California--which brought me to Caliber. I have loved every second at Caliber. My students are incredible and I truly love teaching and growing alongside them! A recent interview with Tracee: What is your favorite thing about teaching 2nd grade at CMA? My favorite thing about teaching 2nd grade at CMA has been having the opportunity to see my students grow. Their joy and excitement for learning is the most rewarding experience! What was your favorite subject growing up? I loved math and science. Did you always think you were going to become a teacher? I knew I was going to be a teacher since I was 4 years old. Whether I was teaching my stuffed dolls, friends in the neighborhood, or my old dog, I was always a teacher! Favorite candy bar or sweet treat? I LOVE CHOCOLATE! If you could go on a dream vacation, what would you do + where would you go? I really love French Polynesia. I would like to go and explore that area in addition to Croatia. What is your favorite thing about the Bay Area (or specifically about Vallejo!)? I love the weather out here! You will never find me back East--no more snow for me :) Congratulations, Tracee!! Meet Morgan Hubbard, our 1st grade teacher at Caliber Beta Academy. Morgan began her career at Caliber as an Education Specialist and has transitioned into a 1st grade lead teaching position. She embodies our value of Heart: Morgan is incredibly warm, supportive, caring, and committed to her students. Notes from Morgan's co-workers at Caliber Beta Academy: "Morgan most definitely puts her kids first. You can see her here in the early morning, staying late after school, or even occasionally on the weekend because she knows that the extra work is what makes the difference for her students. Morgan has a natural way of connecting with kids to show them how much she cares. She also works tirelessly on her craft; her constant tinkering to her classroom instruction creates an optimal learning environment everyday for her scholars. Seeing Morgan's growth over the last 2 years is inspiring for any teacher. Morgan started in the SPED world, moved into 1st grade when we were in a teacher bind, and has blossomed into a true Caliber expert. We are lucky to have her. Morgan collaborates and is always seeking out new direction and insight from other educators on her team. She brings innovative ideas to the 1st grade program which is why we dubbed her our "Caliber brain." Lastly, I love the fact that Morgan always greets me with a smile. Even if she is exhausted, I always get a big smile and laugh! All about Morgan: I grew up in a small, rural town in the middle of Massachusetts called Hubbardston (yes, like my last name but it's just a weird coincidence!). After high school, I knew I needed a change so I tried my luck in the big apple. I moved to New York City and attended New York University to study Social Work and Psychology. During my time in New York I worked as a Social Worker at a Public Defender’s office in lower Manhattan. I was mainly responsible for interviewing folks who were involved in the criminal justice system. The more stories I heard, the more I started to see the overlap between education and the prison industrial complex. This ignited a fire in me, and with my deep love for kids, I knew teaching was the next step. I packed my bags again, this time in search of sunnier skies, and moved across the country to the Bay Area where I found Caliber. I am so blessed to be in my second year here, where I can focus on both academics and social emotional learning with my students while growing alongside of them. Go first grade! A recent interview with Morgan: What is your favorite thing about teaching 1st grade at CBA? My favorite thing about first grade is how much the kids grow, both academically and physically! It is crazy how much growth they make even on a weekly basis. What was your favorite subject growing up? I was all about the math, algebra especially! Favorite candy bar or sweet treat? Honestly---I love all treats. But, if I had to pick just one it would be any chocolate + peanut butter combo. If you could go on a dream vacation, what would you do + where would you go? I would love to see the Northern Lights in Finland or Iceland. What is your favorite thing about the Bay Area (or specifically about Richmond!)? I am a BIG fan of Bay Area weather. Hailing from the east coast, I was very excited to leave the snow behind. In Richmond, I love the taco truck between 24th and 25th on MacDonald-- can’t beat it!! What is one fun fact that most people don't know about you? I don’t *really* like dogs…….at all….. (sorry)! |
