Meet Yalonda Copeland! Our First Grade Lead Teacher at Beta Academy! When I asked another teacher recently about Yalonda, he said: "Yalonda is amazing, and she cares so much about her kids -- even when they are struggling or having a bad day! It is from such an authentic place. It is so admirable."
Background about Yalonda:
Yalonda grew up right here in Richmond. She attended Adams Jr. High and Kennedy High School. Lovonya DeJean was her high school principal! She attended San Jose State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies. After graduation, Yalonda was not sure what to do and worked for Lucky’s for seven years and completed a management training program. She also worked as an executive assistant for several years before deciding to go back to school to obtain her teaching credential and Master’s of Education degree at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont. She has taught second grade for seven years, third grade for one year, and is currently teaching first grade at Caliber. Yalonda believes wholeheartedly in the need to nurture, develop, and teach to the whole child. She is especially excited about Caliber’s belief that all students should have a healthy balance of social-emotional learning and high quality academics.
A recent interview with Yalonda:
What is your favorite thing about teaching 1st grade?
I get OODLES of love and hugs everyday!
What was your favorite subject growing up?
Reading (I always had my head buried in a book, even in the car!)
Did you always think you were going to become a teacher?
NO! I wanted to make a lot of money. I tried corporate America, and I was SO MISERABLE. I was also bored out of my mind!
Favorite candy bar or sweet treat?
I love Red Vines
If you could go on a dream vacation, what would you do + where would you go?
I would go to Israel, Italy, and Spain. There is so much history to see and experience.
What is your favorite thing about the Bay Area (or specifically about Richmond!)?
I grew up in the Bay. There is so much to do and see all within an hour's car ride to the North, South, East, or West.
What is one fun fact that most people don't know about you?
I couldn't dance as a kid. I had two left feet. I kept at it, and now I have a little bit of rhythm!
Come visit Yalonda's energetic and happy room when you come to Beta Academy!
